dc.description.abstract To analyze the steady state security of an Electric Power Systems it is required to, accurately and efficiently, identify the critical contingencies set, i.e., those that when occur may endanger the system's security. The identification of critical contingencies is extremely important during planning stage, since it can impose a system's structural reorganization. Severity indices are used to rank the impact of contingencies in power system security studies. In this paper it will be proposed a new approach to the use of severity indices to contingencies screening. The developed technique is applied to the Portuguese Transmission system and the results obtained were analyzed. The steady state simulations of the Portuguese Transmission System was made with the PSS/E software from Siemens Power Transmission Distribution, Inc., using snapshots that represent pictures of the real system. Finally, some conclusions that provide a valuable contribution to the understanding of the power system en
