Age and level of education impact on expectancy and perceived similarity between virtual and real touristic environments
    ( 2019) Magalhaes,M ; Maximino Bessa ; António Coelho ; Miguel Correia Melo ; 5095 ; 3132 ; 5408
This paper focuses on the combination of 360-degree video and virtual reality for improving the touristic experience. Three scenarios were considered in this study: two 360-degree video visualizations, each one related to different touristic places, both presented in an immersive way, followed by an actual visit to those places. By comparing these situations, it was intended to determine the degree of perceived similarity between the virtual and the corresponding real sites, and to analyze if the users' expectancy was fulfilled. This research comprised a qualitative analysis using data collection based on questionnaires, which were applied to a sample consisted of 45 participants. The independent variables of the study were the participants' age and level of education. The results show no statistically significant impact between the two independent variables (users'age and level of education) and perceived similarity and users' expectancy. Our findings suggest that virtual tourism can act as an efficient promotion tool, considering that users' perceived destination image is not compromised regarding their age or level of education. © 2019 IEEE.

GReSBAS project: A gamified approach to promote more energy efficient behaviours in buildings
    ( 2017) António Cunha Barbosa ; Filipe Joel Soares ; Ozdemir,A ; Zehir,MA ; André Guimarães Madureira ; Kucuk,U ; Portela,J ; António Coelho ; Fernando Cassola Marques ; José Pedro Iria ; 5929 ; 4560 ; 4999 ; 5090 ; 5485 ; 3132
The GReSBAS project (2016-2019) aims to enable the active participation of buildings in DR programs through gamified competition between building owners. In case of large buildings, gamified competition can be established within the building for its occupants, for instance having different floors of the building competing between them. This approach will allow building owners to reduce electricity costs and increase energy efficiency by motivating/rewarding building occupants for participating in DR programs. The concepts and tools developed under GReSBAS will be tested in two demonstration sites: a corporate building in Portugal and a residential building in Turkey. This paper presents the Portuguese demonstration site and describes how the energy consumption, temperature and building occupancy data will be collected, processed and used by the tools developed in GReSBAS.

Immersive 360° video user experience: impact of different variables in the sense of presence and cybersickness
    ( 2019) Miguel Correia Melo ; José Vasconcelos Raposo ; António Coelho ; David Gonçalves Narciso ; Maximino Bessa ; 6565 ; 5408 ; 5095 ; 3132 ; 6646
Virtual Reality (VR) has been recently gaining interest from researchers and companies, contributing to the development of the associated technologies that aim to transport its users to a virtual environment by the stimulation of their senses. Technologies such as Head-Mounted Displays (HMD), capable of presenting 360° video in 3D, are becoming affordable and, consequently, more common among the average consumer, potentiating the creation of a market for VR experiences. The purpose of this study is to measure the influence of (a) video format (2D/monoscopic vs 3D/stereoscopic), (b) sound format (2D/stereo vs 3D/spatialized), and (c) gender on users’ sense of presence and cybersickness, while experiencing a VR application using an HMD. Presence and cybersickness were measured using questionnaires as subjective measures. Portuguese versions of the Igroup Presence Questionnaire for presence and the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire for cybersickness were used. Results revealed no statistically significant differences between (a) VIDEO and (b) SOUND variables on both senses of presence and cybersickness. When paired with (a) VIDEO, the independent variable (c) Gender showed significant differences on almost all subscales of presence. Results suggest that the widely acknowledged differences in spatial ability between genders were a major factor contributing to this outcome. © 2017 Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany
