ItemAn Open Source Business Roles Model for IMS-based Converged Services( 2008) Fernando Luís AlmeidaTraditional telecom sources of revenue are based exclusively in voice and data revenues. They also use a closed-source software model, with no communication between different applications, turning very difficult the delivering of services across different access networks and the deployment of an integrated billing system. Besides that, the complexity to manage these services is huge, from the operator and user points of view. At the same time, the continuous evolution of technology is also creating challenges for service providers. The emergence of Internet Protocol (IP) promises new options, significant savings in Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and Operational Expenditure (OPEX) and opportunities to develop and bring to market services and applications previously not possible. The resolution for many of these problems lies in the evolution to the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS). IMS will enable operators to implement the vision of a subscriber-centric world with independent services access. Service providers will be able to enhance the communications experiences by allowing the end user to integrate every kind of media (voice, video or data) using any network. IMS will also enable the creation of blended services built with multiple atomic services, like messaging, push to talk, push to share and interactive video. The proposed framework for Open Source Business Roles model for IMS-converged services intends to facilitate the creation of business models that takes into account

ItemExperimental evaluation of a R-EAM and noise impact analysis for UWB and Wi-Fi transmission in RoF networks( 2013) Luís Manuel Pessoa ; Oliveira,JMB ; Coelho,DV ; Castro,JCS ; Henrique SalgadoThe performance of a reflective electro-absorption modulator transceiver is assessed in terms of both slope efficiency (SE) and responsivity in a radio-over-fiber network. Different biasing schemes are analyzed, specifically zero bias (passive solution), bias for maximum SE, and bias for maximum responsivity. Finally, two case studies on multiband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing ultra-wide band and Wi-Fi are presented, for which the optimum setup parameters are determined.

ItemAssessment of dispersion map impact on the digital back propagation of long-haul fibre-optic links( 2013) Luís Manuel Pessoa ; Henrique Salgado ; Darwazeh,IThe back propagation algorithm is one of the best methods known for simultaneous linear and nonlinear impairment mitigation in long-haul fibre-optic links. Better understanding the full potential of such algorithm is key to improve the capacity of future links, whose design is likely to depend on the algorithm performance under different link configurations. In this paper, we carry out a novel and pertinent comparison in terms of the computational complexity requirements of both symmetric and asymmetric back-propagation implementation approaches for different dispersion map configurations, using simple single channel transmission, which results in the proposal of several design rules for the optimized deployment of ultra-long haul optical transport systems. In particular, it is concluded that dispersion unmanaged transmission is preferable in the sense of compatibility with different link design configurations as well as computational complexity requirements and maximum performance that can be achieved.

ItemImmersive media experiences (immersiveme 2013 workshop at ACM multimedia)( 2013) Chambel,T ; Bove,VM ; Strover,S ; Paula Viana ; Thomas,GImmersive media has the potential for strong impact on users' emotions and their sense of presence and engagement. The main objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers, students, media producers, service providers and industry players in the area of emergent immersive media. The workshop will provide a platform for a deep discussion on ongoing work, recent achievements and experiences. It is expected not only to consolidate experiences but also to identify aspects where strong collaboration among all the interested players is needed and to point towards future working directions. ItemWearable monitoring system for locomotion rehabilitation( 2013) Catarino,A ; Rocha,AM ; Abreu,MJ ; José Machado da Silva ; João Canas Ferreira ; Vítor Grade Tavares ; Miguel Velhote Correia ; Zambrano,A ; Derogarian,F ; Dias,RHuman motion capture systems are used by medical staff for detecting and identifying mobility impairments, early stages of certain pathologies and can also be used for evaluation of the effectiveness of surgical or rehabilitation intervention. Other applications may involve athlete's performance, occupational safety, among others. Presently there is a considerable number of solutions available, however these systems present some drawbacks, as they are often expensive, considerably complex, difficult to wear and use in a daily basis, and very uncomfortable for the patient. With the purpose of solving the above mentioned problems, a new wearable locomotion data capture system for gait analysis is under development. This system will allow the measurement of several locomotion-related parameters in a practical and non-invasive way, comfortable to the user, which will also be reusable that can be used by patients from light to severe impairments or disabilities. The present paper gives an overview of the research that is being developed, regarding the design of the wearable equipment, textile support, and communications.
