ItemHybrid Heuristic Methodologies applied in the Parameterization of Virtual Urban Environments( 2008) Filipe Cruz ; Luís Paulo Reis ; António CoelhoExpeditious modeling of virtual urban environments has many applications but typically suffers from requiring intensive trial and error to determine reliable generation rules or lacking complete data to input the procedural modeling. Using optimization algorithms it is possible to automate the parametrization of production rules and estimate missing data. This paper presents a hybrid heuristic optimization algorithm developed to solve parameterization problems with mixed discrete and continuous parameter types as a viable solution in a neglected field of application, presenting a successful application in a real scenario and competitive results in performance tests under a standard batch of non-convex non-linear continuous parameter functions.

ItemAutomatic Parameterization for Expeditious Modelling of Virtual Urban Environments - A New Hybrid Metaheuristic( 2008) Filipe Cruz ; António Coelho ; Luís Paulo ReisExpeditious modelling of virtual urban environments consists of generating realistic 3d models from limited information. It has several practical applications but typically suffers from a lack of accuracy in the parameter values that feed the modeller. By gathering small amounts of information about certain key urban areas, it becomes possible to feed a system that automatically compares and adjusts the input parameter values to find optimal solutions of parameter combinations that resemble the real life model. These correctly parameterized rules can then be reapplied to generate virtual models of real areas with similar characteristics to the referenced area. Based on several nature inspired metaheuristic algorithms such as genetic algorithms, simulated annealing and harmony search, this paper presents a new hybrid metaheuristic algorithm capable of optimizing functions with both discrete and continuous parameters and offer competitive results in a highly neglected field of application.

ItemImproving Digital Maps Through GPS Data Processing( 2009) Tiago Freitas ; António Coelho ; Rosaldo RossettiPersonal Navigation Assistants (PNA) depend on updated digital maps for correctly positioning and route guiding users. As updating digital maps by the usual means is a highly expensive and time consuming task, GPS points gathered by existing navigation devices can be used to compare the existing real road network with the digital one. This paper describes an approach to update digital maps through the use of GPS points obtained during users' journeys as a means to identify map incongruence. Detection of new roads and roundabouts are presented with an explanation of the problem and a sample of the results.

ItemIntegration of a suite of sensors in a wireless health sensor platform( 2009) Artur Rocha ; Carlos Eduardo Tavares ; Robert Feld ; John Nelson ; Pepijn Van de Ven ; Alan BourkeIn this paper we discuss the development and clinical evaluation of a wireless platform for health signs sensing. The sensors measure physical activity, ECG, blood oxygen saturation, temperature and respiratory rate. An important aspect of the approach is that the sensors are integrated into one waist-worn device. A mobile phone collects data from this device and uses data fusion in the scope of a decision support system to trigger additional measurements, classify health conditions or schedule future observations. In these decisions, the user's current physical activity plays an important role as the validity of many health signs measurements is strongly related to physical activity. Due to the integration of the sensors and the use of data fusion it is possible to accurately identify health risks and to react promptly. During clinical trials, for which proper ethical approval was obtained, the system was used by healthy elderly volunteers in Limerick (Ireland) and Ancona (Italy). Results of these trials are also discussed in this paper.

ItemAn importer of virtual 3D City Models datasets into a spatiotemporal database( 2009) Augusto Sousa ; Alexandre Carvalho ; José Moreira ; Cristina Ribeiro ; Wagner FranchinGeographical Information Systems (GIS) have an important role in a wide range of application domains, both for the management of spatial data and as a decision support tool. For this reason virtual 3D city models are becoming increasingly complex with respect to their spatial, thematic structures and temporal aspects. In this paper we present Importer CityGML, a tool for parsing and importing XML datasets into a spatiotemporal database prototype system.

ItemModelling a virtual urban environment with realistic terrain features( 2009) Maria Dolores Robles Ortega ; Lidia Ortega Alvarado ; António Coelho ; Augusto SousaMost of the urban models nowadays consider towns as a flat area without sloping zones. However, in order to obtain a realistic model of a city we need to include the information provided by its Digital Elevation Model (DEM). A global representation using the surface topography and the information usually given by an urban GIS (the geometry of buildings, blocks and streets and additional data about street names, number of floors in buildings, etc.) could provide realistic 3D models of urban environments. Nevertheless we find many non-solved problems to deal with, which we address in this paper and provide some research directions.

ItemTerm frequency dynamics in collaborative articles( 2010) Sérgio Nunes ; Cristina Ribeiro ; Gabriel DavidDocuments on the World Wide Web are dynamic entities. Mainstream information retrieval systems and techniques are primarily focused on the latest version a document, gen- erally ignoring its evolution over time. In this work, we study the term frequency dynamics in web documents over their lifespan. We use the Wikipedia as a document collec- tion because it is a broad and public resource and, more im- portant, because it provides access to the complete revision history of each document. We investigate the progression of similarity values over two projection variables, namely re- vision order and revision date. Based on this investigation we find that term frequency in encyclopedic documents – i.e. comprehensive and focused on a single topic – exhibits a rapid and steady progression towards the document’s cur- rent version. The content in early versions quickly becomes very similar to the present version of the document.
